Friends and former classmates of the late Chetan D. Bafna gathered at the cow shelter in Ayanavaram on Sunday to commemorate his life and the values he upheld. A bright student from the Batch of Agarwal Vidyalaya and Junior College, Chetan was known for his deep commitment to the tenets of Jainism and his unwavering compassion for all living beings.
Chetan’s life was a testament to his religious devotion and his care for every creature on the planet. In Jainism, taking Diksha means renouncing all material comforts and dedicating oneself to living the life of a monk. Chetan took this significant spiritual step on August 6th, where, following certain rituals, he attained monkhood and became known as Param Pujiya Chetan Muniji Marashaheb. This act further demonstrated his dedication to a life of spirituality and service. On August 17th, 2024, Chetan Muniji passed away at the age of 47 with Salekhna Santara at Tambaram.
The event at the cow shelter, which saw the participation of his classmates and other well-wishers, was a fitting tribute to his memory, reflecting the charitable spirit that Chetan embodied throughout his life.
The day began with friends and family assembling at The Madras Pinjrapole, Aynavaram, in the early morning. The group engaged in Gow-Seva (service at the cow shelter), honoring Chetan’s deep respect and love for animals. Later in the afternoon, the attendees gathered at the Adyar Cancer Institute, where they participated in serving lunch to approximately 200-225 patients. This act of service was a heartfelt gesture, reflecting Chetan’s lifelong dedication to helping others.
In memory of Chetan, contributions collected from friends were donated to several non-profit organizations that align with the values he cherished:
The Madras Pinjrapole: One-time donation.
Tirutani Guru Jayamal Jain Goushala: Ongoing support through Kayam Mithi.
Shri Parshwa Padmavati Shwetambar Gowshala Jain Temple: Ongoing support through Kayam Mithi.

Chetan is survived by his father, spouse, and three daughters. The memorial event was not only a moment to remember Chetan’s life but also a call to continue the charitable work that he was so passionate about. Those who attended the event were moved by the recollections of his kindness and devotion, ensuring that his legacy will continue to inspire and impact lives for years to come.
