Idi Amin, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979, was a notorious dictator known for his brutal regime marked by human rights abuses and political repression. Since then, Uganda has undergone significant political changes and they have hosted the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala, Uganda, from January 19-20, 2024.

India, a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), reaffirms its commitment to the movement’s principles during the 19th NAM Summit hosted by Uganda. Under the theme ‘Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,’ the summit gathers over 120 developing nations, showcasing India’s support for Uganda’s vision and its dedication to forging equitable global alliances.

NAM: India’s Cold War-Era Initiative and Continued Relevance

Born during the Cold War, NAM, championed by India since its establishment in 1961, provides a platform for states opting for independence and neutrality. Today, India’s pursuit of strategic autonomy extends beyond traditional alliances, emphasizing global initiatives, such as engagement with the Global South and the Group of 77 countries.

India’s Global Engagement: Beyond Geopolitical Boundaries

India’s commitment to global cooperation is evident through initiatives like the “Vaccine Maitri” program, demonstrating its dedication to public health beyond geopolitical boundaries. Actively opposing hegemony and debt entrapment, India’s hosting of the G20 summit and granting full African Union membership underscores its aspiration to represent the developing world’s voice.

Jaishankar highlighted India’s commitment to a multipolar world with a reformed United Nations, emphasizing economic decentralization, cultural rebalancing, and practical steps for global transformation. He stressed the importance of regional economic hubs, resilient supply chains, and people-centric policies, showcasing India’s dedication through projects and solidarity, especially in Africa.  

He highlighted India’s extensive contributions, encompassing 600 significant projects across 78 nations, with a focus on Africa, showcasing India’s dedication amid challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, conflicts, and climate change. Expressing concern for global issues, Jaishankar underscored India’s commitment to NAM principles and the belief in “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” emphasizing a world as one family. Addressing the Gaza conflict, he called for a sustainable solution, emphasizing the need to respect international humanitarian law and work towards a two-state solution for lasting peace.

Economic and Defense Ties: Expanding Horizons with African Nations

India actively explores economic ties and defense cooperation with African nations like Tanzania and Mozambique, tapping into the continent’s vast resources. Strategic partnerships with regional blocs, including ASEAN, highlight India’s multifaceted global engagement beyond traditional alliances.

India plays a crucial role in addressing global challenges, such as facilitating debt restructuring plans in Sri Lanka and engaging with international bodies like the IMF and the Paris Club. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, UN peacekeeping missions, and the establishment of overseas military bases in the Indian Ocean showcase India’s leadership and commitment to global peace and security.
