Pune, 2025 — Nisarg Srishti Welfare Foundation (NSWF), a leading NGO dedicated to reducing noise pollution and promoting environmental awareness across India, successfully guided and supported a real-time noise monitoring study conducted by second-year BSc Economics (Hons) students from the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune.
As part of their curriculum for the course Introduction to Theory of Econometrics, five students — Aditya Prakash Pandey, Akshaj Dewangan, Akshat Mishra, Pragyan Pandey, and Shaurya Bhatla — partnered with NSWF to gain hands-on experience in field-based empirical research. NSWF played a pivotal role in planning the field routes, setting measurement protocols, ensuring safety during ground visits, and offering expert guidance on environmental monitoring.
Under NSWF’s supervision, the students conducted extensive primary data collection, measuring noise levels across six days, ten major festival locations, and three daily time slots — Morning, Afternoon, and Evening. This collaboration provided students with a real-world understanding of environmental challenges and the urgent need for noise pollution control during festivals.
The study was structured around three major research questions:
- Assessing festival noise levels and benchmarking them against WHO and MPCB standards.
- Identifying the most noise-affected areas, with Shaniwar Peth and FC Road L1 showing consistently high readings, especially during evenings and visarjan.
- Comparing their results with MPCB’s 2023 data, where minor differences were observed due to methodological variations. While MPCB largely recorded evening readings, the student team — guided by NSWF — collected data across three time slots, resulting in more balanced daily averages.

Using tools such as pivot tables, descriptive statistics, and ANOVA, the study confirmed that festival-related noise pollution is persistent, event-driven, and significantly varies across time and location.
This project reflects Nisarg Srishti Welfare Foundation’s ongoing mission to create a noise-free India by empowering young researchers, collaborating with academic institutions, and conducting real-time environmental monitoring. NSWF continues to be at the forefront of community-driven environmental action, reaching thousands through awareness sessions, noise mapping projects, and youth engagement programs.
The student team expressed deep appreciation for the NGO’s mentorship and constant support, stating that the collaboration greatly strengthened their understanding of field research and environmental data analysis.
